Super Similarities!

Kia ora

In reading this week my goal was to make connections between other texts and general knowledge to expand meaning and pose questions, using more sophisticated texts.  This means taking information from other texts and combining that knowledge to make on idea.

My task was to fill in a sink with things that impact on my carbon foot print such as using cars or choosing to bike.  after competing the sink you had to write to paragraphs about to of the images you chose to include. The next part of my create was to make a sign to use in a protest to stop climate change. I worked with Ava and Lily to make a poster that we think sends a powerful message. The last part of my create was to make a Venn diagram showing the similarities from to texts. The two text both focused on what is happening with climate change.

My create Task:

Overall I enjoyed making this create and learning more about the environment. I enjoyed working on this goal.

What can you do to stop climate change?

Stop Pollution!

Kia ora

This week in reading I get to chose 3 of 5 options and one of the options I chose the book turning old into new. This book is about how in New Zealand we try and recycle everything we can by using plastic to make new things. I made a poster explaining what we can do to help stop pollution in our school. Some of the ideas I had to stop pollution such as encouraging people to use reusable containers.

I enjoyed learning about how much plastic can be recycled but we need to start doing our part to use more reusable things.

What can you do to use less plastic in your everyday life?

Table and Chair Design

Kia Ora

This week in reading I have been reading about why sitting is bad. I read a text the explained the downsides of sitting such as your heart isn’t as healthy and can lead to heart disease, Whilst standing has many benefits such as good posture as well as better health. My task was to create a desk and chair that could be used to encourage standing and breaks. My desk has an adjustable height so you can stand or sit. There is also a fidget mat for you feet to move around on. My desk has a timer placed on it so you can set it for an amount of time and then when it goes of its time to stand up and move around.

I enjoyed making this as it was challenging and I found that it can be hard to make and design something new.

Did you know that fidgeting in good for you?

Champions of Peace

Kia ora

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are koru’s, doves, peace hand sign, peace sign ( circle ), and olive branches.

These symbols represent peace because they mean new life, strength, peace, hope and victory.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork represents peace because I included a koru and dove wings representing new life and peace.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Susan.B. Anthony. I thought this person was a champion of peace because she played a pivotal role in women’s rights.

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it gave me a new view on how to help with peace for myself, others and the world.

I learnt that peace is hard to achieve and it takes the whole world to get it, there are many ways to make peace like saying something kind or being kind to the earth.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by looking out for others and encouraging myself and others to show peace and encourage in their lives.

How can you show peace in your life?

Tragic 1800!

Kia ora

My Goal this week is to synthesise, synthesising is when you can take knowledge form what you already know and make connections with what you are reading. This week in reading we are learning about the New Zealand wars. The wars were started by the British retaliating form an act that a Maori did. The Maori cut down the British flag. The New Zealand wars started in 1845 and ended in 1872. They lasted for 27 years and ended with the British winning and taking Maori land. From the 8th of July 1844 to January 1845 the flag pole was cut down by Hōne Heke Pōkai. The British lost the first few battles and the Maori surprisingly won some with their experience of the New Zealand terrain. Many villages were destroyed and many Maori didn’t want to fight. My create task was to make an article that was 1800s themed. I used canva and got inspiration from some old news papers. Here is my create:

I enjoyed creating this because it was interesting to learn more about the New Zealand wars and also what happened during them. I found very fun looking at old newspapers.

What do you know about the New Zealand wars?

Fun Fact:

did you know that only 40 chiefs signed the treaty of Waitangi?

Super Symmetry!

Kia ora

This week in maths my task was to create a floor pattern that looks symmetrical, you needed 6 different shapes and 6 different complementary colours. The 6 shapes I chose are: square, circle, hexagon, diamond, cross and trapezoid. Symmetry is when you can cut a shape and it will look the same no matter what. There are different types of symmetry such as mirror which is when the design looks the same on both sides, rotation is when you can take a piece of a design and turn it multiple times while looking the same and finally translation symmetry is when you can copy a design and make it look the exact same.

The colours I used are:

Square – Pink, Green
Circle – Blue
Hexagon – Purple
Diamond – red
Cross – Yellow
Trapezoid – Orange

I made the floor look like a checker board. I then places circles in the pink squares and hexagons in the green. I then placed a cross in the circles and a trapezoid in the hexagon. Then I placed diamonds in between the squares. It ended up looking like this!

I really enjoyed making my floor pattern. I enjoyed using different the different shapes and colours.

Have you ever made anything symmetrical?

Radical Reading!

Kia ora, this week in reading I read about a girl called Maia who had to move for her mums job. She had to leave everything behind, friends and even her dad. When Maia and her Mum have had had enough of unpacking they went to watch Aunty emz. Maia is determined not to show the fact the she is actually really enjoying the show. Aunty emz ends up convincing Maia to take up skating, Maia ends up being great at it. Suddenly Maia falls over and all of Aunty emz friends are watching. So is her mum. Maia thinks that her mum will make fun of her. My task was to create a diary about what Maia might be feeling and her thoughts on moving. Here is the diary that I made!

I really enjoyed making this but I found it a little bit challenging at first because I was struggling to put myself in her shoes, But I got some inspiration and that really helped me. Overall I had fun making this create.

Have you ever had to move away?

Perfect Poems

Kia Ora, Over the past few weeks during writing I have been looking at poems, so far I have made a haiku, diamante, limerick, blackout, biographical and list poems. I have learnt how to make 5 different types of poems and I have really enjoyed creating them.

A haiku is a poem made up of three lines, the first and last lines have 5 syllables and the second line has seven syllables.

A diamante has five lines, the first and last line have one word, the second and fourth line have two adjectives describing what you are writing about and the third line has 3 words ending in ing describing what you are writing about.

In a limerick the first, second and fifth, line all need to rhyme, the third and fourth lines need to rhyme with each other.

A blackout poem is when you have a piece of writing and circle the words that stand out to you and then you blackout the rest of the words.

Biographical poems are when you write about a person, the first line says their name, the second line says four adjectives about the person, the third line is two things they enjoy, the fourth line is three things they love, the fifth line is two things they fear, the sixth line is about something they wonder, the seventh line is about something they wish, the eighth line is about something they dream of, the ninth line is two things they feel, the tenth line is about something they plan to do and on the last line you can add your own idea.

List poems are when you have four words that could be about anything ( seasons, plants, animals, food ) once you have chosen then chose describing words about them.

These are all the poems I have done!

I have really enjoyed learning about some more poems and it has been really fun, next time I would try and make more of some types of poems. My favourite poem if a black out because it is really fun to chose random words and make them into a poem. Overall I really enjoyed making poems.

Whats you favourite type of poem?

Super Science

Kia ora, for the past 2 weeks I have been taking science lessons. Our science focus has been on electric future. One of the experiments was to make a buzzer buzz, The experiment was called battery power. I was given 2 copper and 2 zinc nails, I also got a buzzer, salt water and an empty container. The buzzer was connected by two wires, one was red and one was black.

My hypothesis: That when we placed the salt in the water the buzzer would make a noise.

Materials:

3/4 full specimen jar of water

Teaspoon of salt

Two wires (1 red, 1 black )

1 buzzer

Two copper nails

Two zinc nails

When I started the experiment I started with 2 zinc nails, I couldn’t hear the beeping even when I had put a teaspoon of salt in. Next I tried with both copper nails and it still didn’t work. Afterwards I tried one zinc and one copper I placed the black wire with the copper nail and the red wire with the zinc nail when it didn’t work I asked around to see if anyone else had made it work, nobody had. After a clue from the teacher I tried it again. I placed the copper nail with the red wire and the zinc nail with the black wire, before I even added the salt I could hear the buzz, after I added the salt and mixed it the buzzer was extremely loud.

This is the experiment that I did!

My hypothesises was correct but only after some help and trail and error, my hypothesises was correct because the buzzer made a very loud.  Overall this experiment took some trail and error. I really enjoyed making the experiment work and it was really fun to mix the salt in and make the buzzer louder.

What science experiments have you done?

Magical Maths

Kia ora,

This week in maths my create was to spin a wheel 45 times and then make a graph with the results. I had 6 options on the wheel they were, Hotcakes, porridge, sausage sizzle, hot chocolate, toast and cereal. Cereal was the most popular and toast and porridge were the least popular. I made 2 tally chart in my maths book, one to keep track on how many times I had spun the wheel and another on to keep track of how many times the options were chosen. I made a graph to help display the results better.

If I id this  again I would maybe made my create a bigger to easier show the graph and make the writing easier to read. Overall I really enjoyed creating this.

Have you ever made a graph?
